Little Edie, the artist's grandmother was left destitute when her father died in 1925, aged 8 years old. This picture was drawn in pencil from a photograph of Little Edie outside her Grandmother's house in Leeds that same year. For the rest of her childhood she and her mother moved between various relatives until her mother died when she was 17 and she married in 1939, aged 22. She was happily married for 66 years, and brought up the artist as her own.
